What kind of motor insurance do you need?

When you take out a car insurance policy, you will be offered a choice of three main levels of cover.

Third party: the minimum type of motor insurance you can take out is “third party”. This covers liability for:

* Injuries to other people, including passengers
* Damage to other people`s property
* Passengers for accidents caused by them
* Arising from the use of caravan or trailer while attached to the car.

TIP: Third party cover is OK for people who cannot afford a better type of car insurance.

It may make sense if you are driving an old banger where almost any repair would cost more than the car is worth, or where its replacement might only cost a couple of hundred pounds at most.

But if your car costs more to replace, you need to consider something better.

Third party, fire and theft: the next step up is “third party, fire and theft”, sometimes written as TPFT. This provides the above cover, plus fire or theft of the vehicle. If you are at fault in the event of an accident, TPFT will not pay for repairs to your car.

TIP: TPFT cover is useful for those whose car is not worth much – but would still cost more to replace than the cost of excesses. It can also be useful for younger drivers who might find fully comprehensive policies very costly, those who only drive occasionally or have minimal no-claims bonuses.

But it is generally unsuitable for regular drivers, or those with expensive cars.

Fully comprehensive: this is the most complete form of car insurance and protects against the above, plus:

* Accidental damage to your car
* Personal accident benefit
* Medical expenses
* Loss of or damage to personal effects in the car

TIP: Not all “fully comp” insurance is the same. Although all insurers will cover off the basics, many will offer additional variants on their policies, such as courtesy cars in the event of theft, breakdown or accident, or protected no-claims bonuses.

You may also want free cover for driving in Europe and, in some cases, legal aid when the accident is not your fault. These benefits may incur an extra cost.

Commonly asked questions about motor car insurance

Q1. Can I get immediate cover for my car insurance?

Providing you have a credit or debit card, most insurers can issue you with immediate cover. Terms and conditions apply will apply to this though.

Q2. The online system does not recognise the make and model of my car - what should I do?

If they can not recognise your car from the registration mark (the number plate) then after you've double checked you've got it right, leave it blank and pick the make and model of your car manually. You should find the correct model.

Q3. Does my policy cover me to drive abroad?

This varys from policy to policy and you should contact your insurance company before going abroad to ensure you're covered.

Q4. Does my policy cover me to drive other cars?

You could check your policy or contact them to find out. Don't ever make assumptions as to what you're insured to drive. If you are not sure then ask.

Q5. When will I receive my insurance documents if I apply online?

This can vary - from a few days to up to 10 days. If you've not received documents after this time then please contact your insurers to find out why there is a delay.

Q6. What does No Claims Bonus mean?

No Claims Bonus represents the number of years you have held a policy without making a claim or having a claim made against you. Any No Claim Bonus that you have earned can only be used on one policy at a time.

Q7. What is an excess?

An excess is the part of a claim that you will have to pay. Different drivers on the same policy can have different excesses - if a driver is newer then they may have a bigger excess.

Q8. Will you insure my car if it has modifications?

Modifications that improve your car's value, performance, handling or attractiveness may be unacceptable. You may have to contact companies directly if your car is modified.

Q9. Can you provide insurance for my vehicle if it has been imported?

Yes, most insurers can quote for some imports. Most of the insurers will allow cover on European imports. However, companies may have to refer to the insurer to check grouping and terms. If you car is imported you may have to contact them directly for a quote

Q10. Will I be supplied with a courtesy car while my car is being repaired?

This will depend on the policy you have.

Q11. I've been a named driver on someone else’s policy for a few years - does that entitle me to a no claims discount if I start my own?

Although your driving experience will be taken into account, this does not automatically entitle you to a no claims discount if you take out your own policy.

Q12. Can I pay by installments?

Companies will allow you to pay by installments.

Q13. Do the years I've spent driving a company car count towards my NCD (no claims discount)?

Although your driving experience will be taken into account, this does not automatically entitle you to no claims discount if you take out your own policy.

Q14. How do I make changes to my policy?

You should alert your changes to your insurer as soon as possibly. Failing to do so may invalidate your insurance.

Q15. Will you cover the car I've been lent by a garage?

Some policies cover this - you should check your policy.

Q16. What if I lose my certificate?

You should contact your insurer for a replacement policy. There may be a small charge.
