What is car insurance?

All about the different levels of car insurance. There are three main levels of car insurance cover

Third party - Covers your liability to other people (third parties) and covers claims made by third parties, against you, for bodily injury or damage to their property.
This is the minimum type of car insurance available. It only covers injuries to other people (includes your passengers), damage to other property.

If it suitable when your car has low value and would not cost much to replace. It is the cheapest form of insurance.
If your car would cost a lot to replace then you should get a better level of insurance.
This also covers you for liability of passengers for accidents caused by them and liability arising from the use of a caravan or trailer, while attached to the car.

Third party, fire and theft is the next level up.
This covers you if people claim against you for injury or damage and if your car is damaged by fire or stolen.

If you are at fault in an accident, TPFT will not pay for repairs to your car.

This is ok for cars which are not worth a lot or if fully comp insurance would be too dear. If you have an expensive car you should get a higher level of cover though.

Fully comprehensive: this is the most expensive and the most complete form of car insurance and protects the same as third party, fire and theft and accidental damage to your car, loss of personal effects in the car, plus medical expensive and personal accident benefits.

Check carefully what is covered - there are many things that may not be included as standard such as courtesy cars.
