How safe is your shed? |
| Shed safety hints
|
Keep your shed safeA garden shed can be vulnerable to theft. What do you keep in your shed? How valuable is the stuff inside? And how can you protect it? Thefts from sheds can be very common and it's partly because people keep so much stuff in them that they become targets. Anything from bikes to power tools and mowers as well as stuff that doesn't always fit in the house like golf clubs, and other items. Make your shed more secure Restrict access to your garden. Lock side gates, keep main gates shut and have a good boundary fence of hedge. Have tall gates that can't just be jumped over. Whilst you shouldn't have barbed or razor wire or broken glass on the top of fences and walls you can allow brambles to overgrow or plant a prickly hedge to prevent ingress. Use gravel on paths, the noise it makes being walking on is offputting. Ensure your shed is visible from the house. Ensure the window is also visible as well as the door. Routinely check your shed to see that it's intact. Use a good quality padlock/hasp or mortice lock on the door. Ensure screws are covered. A closed shackle padlock is good. Ensure the door and frame are strong enough to support the type of lock system. Make sure the hinges are safe and can't be undone. Use Non-returnable security screws or coach bolts.
Reinforce the door and panels of the shed. Use perspex or laminated glass to make it harder to get in through the window - or use a metal screen. Cover the inside of the window to stop people being able to see in. Why not invest in some garden lighting? A PIR that comes on when someone goes into the garden means you're alerted to when someone is in the garden - and it also means you get the light on when you go to the shed! Check out shed alarms. There's several available that could be really useful. Chain items together with bike lock style loops. If all your power tools are connected it means they have to move them all at once. This can deter thieves as it's just too cumbersome to carry several things at once. Locking bikes together can also help. If you are building a new shed then consider putting a metal loop into concrete in the floor. This could be good for chaining things too! Secure ladders. Don't make it easy for someone to either steal your ladders
or use them to break in to upstairs windows. Mark your property with a UV Pen or if it's metal have it stamped with your postcode and house number. Ask your local police about smart water as it's sometimes available free. Ask about bike stamping too - some forces offer this as a free service.
